Teaching Philosophy:
I strive to educate my students not only about the technical aspects of flute performing, but musicality, rhythm, music theory, and music history as well. I hope to fill each of my students with an appreciation and love for music and flute playing. We will work on music for honor band auditions, solos for recitals, and fun music that keeps each student excited about playing the flute
Lessons:
Consistent attendance and practice is necessary to ensure discipline and the progress of students in the study of the flute.
- Attendance:
If a lesson must be missed, please call ahead. Parents and students must notify the teacher at least 24 hours in advance for re-scheduling of lessons, otherwise there will be no refund or make-up of lessons. If the teacher cancels a lesson, it will be rescheduled at the earliest possible time.
Your lesson is at a specific time each week and you are expected to attend at the scheduled time. No last minute cancellations of lessons are allowed, except for illness. Lessons may not be skipped due to “no practice” time by the student
- Tardiness:
Please be on time! If a student arrives late, they will finish only the balance of the lesson, and will not go over time, as it will interfere with the next students' scheduled lesson time.
- Practice:
Thirty (30) minutes, five (5) days a week is the minimum amount I require my students to practice. As the student becomes more advanced, more practice time is required. In order to accomplish the practice requirements, a consistent schedule must be carved out of the student’s day. I realize every student has a very busy day to day routine, and it is very easy to let practicing the flute drop to the bottom of their to-do list. However, in order for private flute lessons to be effective, the student must partake in daily practice. I recommend that parents sit down with their child, figure out a practice schedule, and ensure that practicing takes place.
- Required Materials:
Students must have a metronome and tuner to assist them with their practicing. I have also listed some suggested books. I will discuss these with the students and parents, deciding which books must be purchased.
- What to expect at your first lesson:
The first lesson is offered as a one-time trial lesson in which the instructor and student get acquainted with each other. I will ask about your past experience with music and/or lessons, and find out about your goals. Please bring any books or solos you have already studied or purchased. Prepare a short piece so I can hear an example of your playing. The first lesson is usually a lot of talking--letting you know what to expect for coming lessons and giving you an opportunity to ask questions. The second lesson will be more of a typical lesson.
Location:
All lessons are held at Everjoy Music Studio at 63 Peters Canyon Road. Irvine, CA 92606. For directions to the studio, please click here
There is a small waiting area for parents, and the Jamboree Market Place is located about 5 minutes from the studio.
The studio is open from 10am until 7pm on Monday through Friday.
Tuition:
$60 for 1 hour lesson
$45 for 45 minute lessons
Lessons are available in 45 or 60 minute increments, depending on the level of the flute student
Monthly tuition is due by the first lesson of each month, with the total tuition depending on the number of weeks in the month. Tuition is non-refundable. Each student is scheduled for a specific weekly time slot. Your payment reserves that time slot.
Fees for Certificate of Merit will be billed separately as needed.
Oppurtunities for Students:
- Certificate of Merit:
CM is recommended for students, but not required. CM consists of a performance for a MTAC adjudicator and a theory test. This is a great performance opportunity for the student to have something to work towards, and receive feedback from an outside musician other than their teacher.
- Auditions:
There are many opportunities for students to audition for ensembles throughout the year. Honor band groups, national flute association high school solo and flute choir competitions, MTAC concerto competition and solo competitions, and youth orchestras are only a few examples. For the serious student, these auditions all provide great performing experiences, and are very helpful for motivating more practice time!
